DOJ, DHS probing deal to share states’ voter roll data
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed it will work with the Department of Justice (DOJ) as the DOJ pressures states to turn over voter roll information.
The Justice Department has sought to force states to turn over their voter rolls, sparking litigation with some GOP-led states, while more than 20 Democrat-run states have sued to fight the release of the data, arguing it violates privacy rights.
“Collaboration with the DOJ will lawfully and critically enable DHS to prevent illegal aliens from corrupting our republic’s democratic process and further ensure the integrity of our elections nationwide. Elections exist for the American people, not illegal aliens, to choose their leaders,” the DHS said in a statement.
The DOJ did not respond to a request for comment.
The exact nature of the data the DHS would receive is unclear, but CBS News, which first reported the pending agreement, found the information was slated to be shared with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
There is little evidence to back GOP claims that noncitizens are voting in U.S. elections. Reviews have found just a handful of instances where noncitizens have attempted to vote in U.S. elections, countering GOP claims of widespread fraud.
A Brennan Center study from the 2016 general election found an estimated 30 incidents of suspected, but not confirmed, cases of noncitizen votes out of 23.5 million ballots cast, roughly 0.0001 percent of the vote.
The DOJ has broadly asserted it needs to see voter rolls to ensure they are accurate.
“Accurate, well-maintained voter rolls are a requisite for the election integrity that the American people deserve,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a release when the DOJ sued five states in February.
“This latest series of litigation underscores that This Department of Justice is fulfilling its duty to ensure transparency, voter roll maintenance, and secure elections across the country.”
