Harry Potter owl among animals granted UN international protection

(NewsNation) — The snowy owl, hammerhead shark and cheetah are among 40 new animal species that have been designated for international protection by the United Nations.

The U.N. Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) approved the measures over the weekend.

The initiative aims “to strengthen global or regional conservation efforts of such iconic species as the cheetah, striped hyena, snowy owl, giant otter, great hammerhead shark, and several shorebird species.”

All species and populations are now classified as either “species in danger of extinction” or “species in need of coordinated international action.”

Multispecies conservation plans were also implemented for the Amazon.

“We came to Campo Grande knowing that the populations of half the species protected under this treaty are in decline,” CMS Executive Secretary Amy Fraenkel said in the release.

“We leave with stronger protections and more ambitious plans, but the species themselves are not waiting for our next meeting,” she added.
