Democrats to force House GOP vote on ending Iran war
House Democrats will force a vote this week on legislation designed to end the Iran War, despite lingering questions about whether it has enough backing to pass.
The vote was expected, although party leaders had vowed to stage it only after they had secured the support to pass.
That plan has changed, according to Rep. Greg Meeks (N.Y.), the senior Democrat on the Foreign Affairs Committee, who said Wednesday that there are a small handful of Republicans who remain “on the fence” and won’t commit one way or the other.
The only way to learn their intentions, Meeks said, is to bring the bill to the floor and force their hands — a move he intends to make before the week’s end.
“I can’t wait anymore to see what they’re going to do,” Meeks said. “Let ‘em vote, and we’ll see what happens.”
The Meeks resolution is very similar to another war powers measure, sponsored by Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) that failed in the House in early March. Both proposals are designed to end the Iran........
