Trump says US will be done with Iran in 2-3 weeks
President Trump said Tuesday that the United States will leave Iran within two to three weeks, a longer deadline than the four to six weeks the administration has been saying.
“I would say within two weeks, maybe three,” Trump said in the Oval Office during an executive order signing. “We’re hitting them very hard. Last night we knocked out tremendous amounts of missile-making facilities.”
But he said, “It’s possible that we’ll make a deal before that.”
“If they come to the table, that’ll be good. But it doesn’t matter whether they come or not, we’ve set them back,” he said.
The administration has repeatedly said the U.S.’s operation in Iran will last four to six weeks. It is currently in its fifth week.
Trump said he had one goal with the military operation, which was getting Iran to not have a nuclear weapon, “and that goal has been attained.”
When asked what his plan was to bring down gas prices, which have risen since the start of the operation in Iran because of the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said, “All I have to do is leave Iran.”
“They’ll come tumbling down,” he said.
The strait usually sees the passage of 20 million barrels of oil and petroleum products a day, but supply has been cut off except for a limited number of ships.
Trump said, however, that he “heard tremendous numbers of ships were sailing through” and that negotiations continue.
