For decades, “60 Minutes” has been the gold standard of television journalism. It’s one of the few places in media where the reporting, not the personalities, has traditionally been the star.  

Last night, the turmoil at CBS News reached a new level.  

Veteran correspondent Scott Pelley, one of the most recognizable faces in television journalism and a fixture at “60 Minutes” for more than two decades, has been fired by the network after a public clash with new leadership.  

According to reporting from The New York Times, the firing came just one day after Pelley confronted newly appointed executive producer Nick Bilton during a staff meeting over sweeping changes at the program. Pelley had already become one of the most vocal internal critics of the network’s direction, publicly accusing leadership of undermining the culture and values that made “60 Minutes” one of the most respected news programs in the world.  

The dismissal follows a string of departures, leadership shakeups, and growing concerns about editorial independence that many journalists inside and outside CBS have been watching closely.
