Cornell defendant fighting Letitia James appointment as special prosecutor

One of the men accused in the Cornell University gang rape lawsuit is fighting the appointment of New York Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor on the case, pointing to concerns of bias. 

Gillio Lopes, one of the seven men named by Jane Doe’s lawsuit, argues comments James made in a Facebook post in support of his anonymous accuser disqualifies her from leading the case.  

“What this young woman has been forced to endure is horrific and unacceptable. I’m holding her in my heart and in my prayers. To her, and to all survivors:  you’re not alone. We stand with you,” James posted three days before New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) appointed her to the case.
