74 percent say college students should be taught how to use AI: Survey

A Quinnipiac University Poll released Wednesday found a vast majority say college students should be taught how to use AI amid a boom in the technology.

Seventy-four percent of Americans say it is very or somewhat important that a college student learn how to use AI, with only 14 percent saying it is not important at all.

But Americans also seem to think AI will have a negative impact on education, with 47 percent believing college students will use the technology to avoid learning, while 42 percent believe students will use it to help them learn.

Younger people tend to more pessimistic in thinking college students will use AI to avoid learning, while older Americans are more likely to believe students will use the technology for good.

A majority of Americans oppose AI used as tutors for college students or used to screen student applications.

The results come as another poll recently found that 47 percent of college students thought about switching majors due to AI’s impact on the workforce and fears the technology could eliminate certain jobs.

Despite the massive change AI is making to the workforce, universities are still struggling with what AI policies in the classroom should look like and how it can be incorporated into learning.

The Quinnipiac poll also found that amid the Trump administration’s attacks on higher education and international students, a majority of Americans give higher education a “good grade” and believe international students coming to the U.S. is a “good thing.”

A plurality also believes the federal government should increase the amount of money it provides in student loans as the Trump administration makes changes to decrease that amount this summer.
