Toddler crawls under fence near wolf enclosure at Hershey zoo, suffers minor injuries
HERSHEY, Pa. (WHTM) — A toddler was injured at ZooAmerica in Hershey, Pennsylvania Saturday morning after officials there say they crawled under a fence and came close to the wolf habitat.
In a statement to Nexstar’s abc27 News, a Hershey Entertainment and Resorts spokesperson confirmed that the incident happened Saturday morning and the 18-month-old child suffered minor injuries.
“Based on our review, an unsupervised 18-month old child was able to crawl under an exterior perimeter fence, travel to the primary metal enclosure surrounding the wolf habitat, and put his hand through that fence,” the spokesperson said. “A wolf approached and made contact with the child’s hand. This type of response is consistent with natural animal behavior, and was not a sign of aggression.”
“The child was never inside the wolf’s enclosure,” they added.
Hersheypark said the safety of guests and the wellbeing of animals at the facility “are our highest priorities.”
“Our habitats are designed with multiple layers of protection, and clear signage and barriers are in place to help ensure safe viewing,” the spokesperson added. “Guests are expected to remain within designated areas and closely supervise children at all times.”
The zoo is part of the entertainment complex in Hershey, Pennsylvania, featuring a chocolate-themed amusement park. The zoo’s website says it has three gray wolves.
Hersheypark made headlines last summer when a lost boy wandering a monorail line above a crowd was rescued by a park visitor who climbed onto a building and jumped onto the rails. The child was unharmed and reunited with his family.
