Menefee, Green’s Democratic primary battle heads to runoff
The Democratic primary between Rep. Christian Menefee (D-Texas) and Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) is projected to head to a runoff in the Houston-based 18th Congressional District, according to Decision Desk HQ.
The race will shift to another May 26 showdown between Menefee, the 37-old-lawmaker who won a special election to fill the remainder of the late Rep. Sylvester Turner’s (D-Texas) seat in January, and 78-year-old Green, who’s served in the House for over two decades and is one of the party’s fiercest critics against President Trump.
Though recent public polling showed Menefee comfortably leading Green, neither candidate pushed past 50 percent on Tuesday.
The two were pitted in an awkward member-on-member matchup after Texas Republicans redrew the Lone Star State’s congressional lines, making Green’s seat in the 9th Congressional District a GOP-favored district. Green decided to vie for reelection, instead, in the more comfortably blue 18th Congressional District.
Green has gained prominence for filing articles of impeachment against the president and for his ejections from two of Trump’s addresses to Congress. Before Menefee’s election, the 37-year-old served as Harris County attorney.
The issue of age and generational change has become a focal point in the race, particularly in Texas, where two senior Democrats — Turner and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee — died in the last few years.
Green rebuked criticisms over his age and slammed the pro-cryptocurrency industry for wading into his race. Protect Progress, a super PAC affiliated with the pro-crypto network Fairshake, announced last month that it was spending $1.5 million to defeat Green, pointing to the fact that he voted against key pieces of crypto legislation.
