Vance: Iran ceasefire deal ‘a fragile truce’
Vice President Vance characterized the two-week ceasefire deal between the U.S. as “a fragile truce” while speaking in Hungary on Wednesday.
“If the Iranians are willing in good faith to work with us, I think we can make an agreement,” Vance said.
“If they’re going to lie, if they’re going to cheat, if they’re going to try to prevent even the fragile truce that we’ve set up from taking place, then they’re not going to be happy,” he continued.
“Because what the president has also shown is that we still have a clear military, diplomatic, and maybe most importantly we have extraordinary economic leverage,” he said. “The president has told us not to use those tools. He’s told us to come to the negotiating table, but if the Iranians don’t do the exact same thing, they’re going to find out that the president of the United States is not one to mess around.”
President Trump late Tuesday announced another temporary pause on U.S. attacks in Iran for two weeks — as long as the regime agreed to open the Strait of Hormuz. The president said a 10-point proposal received from Tehran was a “workable basis on which to negotiate.”
According to The Guardian, citing Iranian state television, the 10-point plan includes the continuation of Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, a U.S. military withdrawal from the Middle East and the lifting of all primary and secondary sanctions on Iran.
Talks between the U.S. and Iran are set to take place in Islamabad on Friday.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt signaled Tuesday that the talks were still being planned.
“There are discussions about in person talks, but nothing is final until announced by the president or the White House,” she said.
Trump threatened earlier Tuesday morning that “a whole civilization will die tonight never to be brought back again” unless “something revolutionary wonderful” occurs to get a deal agreed upon by the U.S. and Iran.
