Trump: ‘Bad’ for Paxton to say he won’t drop out if Cornyn gets endorsement
President Trump warned Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Thursday that it would be “bad for him” not to drop out of the state’s Republican Senate primary runoff if the president decides to back incumbent Sen. John Cornyn.
Trump was responding to a question during an interview with Politico about Paxton’s recent comments saying he will be “staying in the race” regardless of whom Trump endorses.
“Well, that’s bad for him to say,” Trump replied. “That is bad for him. So maybe, maybe that leads me to go the other direction.”
Paxton originally made the comments during an interview with Real America’s Voice on Wednesday.
“I’ve spent a year of my life campaigning against John Cornyn because John has not represented the people of Texas well,” Paxton told the outlet. “Everything that Trump stood for, John Cornyn’s fought.”
Trump said on Wednesday that he would endorse in the contested race “soon,” adding that the candidate he does not endorse should drop out “immediately.”
“IT MUST STOP NOW! We have an easy to beat, Radical Left Opponent, and we have to TOTALLY FOCUS on putting him away, quickly and decisively! Both John [Cornyn] and Ken [Paxton] ran great races, but not good enough. Now, this one, must be PERFECT!” Trump wrote in a TruthSocial post.
Republicans have voiced concerns that if the Texas intraparty continues, resources will be drained ahead of November’s general election midterms.
Whoever emerges victorious in the May 26 primary runoff will face Democratic nominee James Talarico, a state lawmaker, on Election Day.
