Chilling bodycam video shows California gunfight that killed officer, innocent father
(KTLA) — Dramatic body-worn camera footage of a deadly shootout last year in Baldwin Park, Calif., shows the moment a police officer was killed and another wounded in an incident that also left an innocent bystander dead.
The deadly encounter began around 7:15 p.m. on May 31, in a neighborhood where police responded to reports of a man firing a rifle in the street.
An arriving Baldwin Park Police Department officer who was first on scene saw an unresponsive person lying on the ground. Before he could help, however, he immediately began taking fire from an assault-style rifle wielded by the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Eduardo Robert Medina-Berumen.
The suspect also fired at a second patrol unit that arrived moments later, hitting the vehicle twice. One of the shots hit officer Anthony Pimentel’s windshield, sending glass and shrapnel into his face.
Surveillance and witness video showed neighbors, many of whom had gathered for weekend parties and get-togethers, scrambling for safety as rapid gunfire echoed through the neighborhood.
A law enforcement helicopter helped ground units find Medina-Berumen lying in the front yard of a nearby home.
Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrived along with additional Baldwin Park police officers, including 35-year-old Samuel Riveros, a nine-year veteran of the department, who began a dangerous approach toward the suspect.
