‘Revenge of the Nerds,’ ‘Lizzie McGuire’ actor Robert Carradine dead at 71

(KTLA) – Actor Robert Carradine, well known for films like “Revenge of the Nerds and “The Long Riders” has died at the age of 71, according to a family statement.

The youngest in a family filled with famous actors, his older brother, Keith Carradine, called Robert “the bedrock of his family,” Deadline reported.

The 71-year-old, according to family, battled bipolar disorder for some 20 years before losing his life to the condition.

“In a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a beacon on light to everyone around him. We are bereft at the loss of this beautiful soul and want to acknowledge Bobby’s valiant struggle against his nearly two-decade battle with Bipolar Disorder,” the family said in a statement to the entertainment outlet.

Family members said they wanted to put a spotlight on his struggle with the mental illness, saying that there’s no shame in it, and that even as he battled the disorder, he was profoundly gifted.

“It is an illness that got the best of him, and I want to celebrate him for his struggle with it, and celebrate his beautiful soul,” Keith Carradine told Deadline.

While the actor was likely best known for the 1984 hit comedy “Revenge of the Nerds” and the proceeding franchise that followed, in which he starred alongside Anthony Edwards as head nerd Lewis Skolnick, he also found more recent popularity in the “Lizzie McGuire” television series where he played the father.

Born March 24, 1954, Carradine is survived by his children, grandchildren, brothers, nieces and nephews.

The family, Deadline reported, was asking for privacy at this time.
