The holy war America needed
Americans have been wrestling with the subject of President Trump’s influence on Christianity since 2016. For some, the president is a means to an end. For others, he is a modern-day false prophet. The conflict was inevitably going to come to a head as Trump and the GOP gained more power. As has been noted before, there is a big gap between the idea of Christian nationalism and the actual denominations of Christianity, including the biggest denomination of all.
Enter the pope. What we have seen in the last couple of weeks has been nothing short of bonkers. And in the age of Trump, that is really saying something. But the head of the largest denomination of Christianity both in the U.S. and the world found himself butting heads with Trump because he called for an end to war. Trump and company told the pope to essentially shut up and dribble. Stick to religion. Don’t talk about politics. Stay in your holy lane. Some even ventured that the pope didn’t actually know what he was talking about from a theological stance.
But let’s be honest. This pope was always going to butt heads with Trump and you could have seen it coming a mile away. Trump claimed in his Truth Social post that Leo XIV never would have been elected if Trump was not elected in 2024. Now Trump might actually be right. I know because I predicted it. Catholicism is growing in the U.S. for a myriad of reasons. Some of it is young men looking for a sense of belonging. Some people are feeling anxious about the state of the world. Some don’t find the humanist approach of science and reason acceptable in a world that is irrational and unreasonable. And the elephant in........
