3 dead, more than a dozen first responders taken to hospital after hazmat situation in New Mexico town

MOUNTAINAIR, N.M. (KRQE) – Three people have died and more than a dozen others were taken to a hospital after exposure to an “unidentified substance” at a home in rural New Mexico, state police said.

Officers with the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the Mountainair home on Wednesday morning to find four people unresponsive inside the residence. Three have died, while another was rushed to an Albuquerque hospital for treatment.

First responders who arrived at the home soon began experiencing symptoms of nausea and dizziness after possible exposure to the substance, and were taken to area hospitals for treatment and decontamination.
