Why taxpayers should check their withholding using this free tool

(NEXSTAR) – The 2026 tax filing deadline has passed, but experts recommend preparing for your next return now, especially in the wake of tax code changes in the Trump Administration’s “One, Big, Beautiful Bill (OBBB).”

The law sparked predictions of “very large” tax refunds in part thanks to the midyear boost to the standard deduction, a change that wasn’t reflected in employer withholding.

“Withholding” is the amount an employer takes out of checks for federal tax purposes. Self-employed people who set aside federal tax money in the form of estimated taxes may also want to double check how much they are withholding.
