Europeans awaiting ‘clarity’ on next Trump steps after tariff ruling

European nations are awaiting “clarity” on President Trump’s next steps following the Supreme Court’s ruling, which struck down many of his tariffs as unlawful Friday.

“We take note of the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court and are analysing it carefully,” said Olof Gill, the deputy chief spokesperson for the European Commission. “We remain in close contact with the U.S. Administration as we seek clarity on the steps they intend to take in response to this ruling.”

On Friday, the court ruled Trump overstepped his authority in his imposition of tariffs onto almost every country.

In January, Trump threatened a new wave of tariffs on Europe to pressure governments in a standoff over Greenland, which Trump has expressed plans to acquire. But after announcing a “framework” deal over the territory, he said he would not impose tariffs that were scheduled for Feb. 1. Last week, Europe said it was debating how it wanted its future relationship to look with the U.S. following the tariff threats.

European Union lawmakers will hold an emergency meeting Monday to reassess the union’s trade deal with the U.S. in response to the Supreme Court’s decision, according to a Bloomberg report. The lawmakers were expected to vote Tuesday to move forward with ratifying the U.S.-EU agreement, which they had previously stalled after Trump’s moves on Greenland.

“Businesses on both sides of the Atlantic depend on stability and predictability in the trading relationship,” Gill said in the statement. “We therefore continue to advocate for low tariffs and to work towards reducing them.”
