Man jailed over Charlie Kirk post awarded $835K settlement
A Tennessee man will receive an $835,000 settlement after being jailed for more than a month over a social media post he shared about the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.
Retired law enforcement officer Larry Bushart, 61, was arrested in September and spent 37 days in jail after sharing Facebook memes accusing the Turning Point USA founder of spreading hate. The Perry County sheriff’s office claimed the posts encouraged violence, and Bushart’s bail was set at $2 million.
“Investigators believe Bushart was fully aware of the fear his post would cause and intentionally sought to create hysteria within the community,” Perry County Sheriff Nick Weems told The Tennessean in September.
Bushar was released after the charges were dropped, and later filed a federal lawsuit against Perry........
