Kimmel: ‘I feel a bit defeated’ after Colbert cancellation
Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is expressing concern about the future of late-night TV after CBS canceled “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” a move that fueled speculation about political pressure on outspoken hosts in the Trump era.
In a profile published Monday by Vulture, Kimmel said the decision to drop the show was a troubling sign for his own future in television.
“I feel a little bit defeated by it,” he said. “In a lot of ways, I feel like I’m looking at my own future.”
CBS announced last year that it was axing Colbert’s highly rated show and “The Late Night” franchise, citing financial pressures. Its series finale was on May 21.
“This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late-night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount,” the network said at the time.
Kimmel questioned the network’s public explanation, pointing to reports that CBS had encouraged Colbert to sign a five-year contract.
