GOP attorneys general ask DOJ to block Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery deal

A group of Republican attorneys general is asking the Department of Justice (DOJ) to scrutinize a planned merger between Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery, a deal that has come under fire in recent weeks over antitrust concerns and accusations from the right of what lawmakers argue is left-leaning bias at the streamer.

Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers (R) and Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen (R) led an 11-state coalition in a letter to the DOJ that argued the proposed merger would give Netflix a considerable market share over its competitors, which they said could lead to higher prices, lower-quality content and less innovation.

“If Netflix is permitted to consummate its acquisition of Warner Brothers, the elimination of competitors and the vertical foreclosure of content library inputs that are crucial to competitors may lead to, among other things, a monopoly that will charge the State’s citizens higher subscription prices for less content of reduced quality,” the attorneys general wrote.

The letter comes a day after Paramount Skydance, the media conglomerate seeking to mount a hostile bid undercutting the $70 billion agreement between Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery, sweetened its offer to $31 per share and said it is willing to pay a multibillion dollar termination fee.

President Trump’s DOJ, which recently ousted the head of its antitrust division, will be charged with approving the merger.

Trump in recent days has attacked Netflix over comments made by Susan Rice, a prominent member of its board, while Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill have raised concerns about Netflix’s content, which they say caters to left-leaning audiences.
