CNN mogul and founder Ted Turner dead at 87

Ted Turner, the media mogul who founded CNN and presided over the outlet at it reshaped the cable news business, died on Wednesday at the age of 87.

Turner began his career in the media business as an account executive with Turner Advertising Company in the 1970s and launched CNN in June of 1980.

Regarded as one of the most influential media moguls of the 20th century, Turner was a noted philanthropist, conservationist and activist who dedicated portions of his wealth to fighting the proliferation of nuclear weapons around the world as well as other causes.

Nicknamed “the Mouth of the South,” Turner was known for his penchant for being outspoken on political issues and grew his portfolio over five decades to include major media and sports brands like World Championship Wrestling and the Atlanta Braves, which he sold in the early 2000s.
