Loud ‘boom’ reported across NE Ohio: Possible meteor?

(WJW) – A loud ‘boom’ was reported across northeast Ohio just before 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

Nexstar’s WJW viewers flooded its newsroom with reports of what sounded like a “large explosion” lasting several seconds and causing homes and businesses to “shake.”

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, “the latest GLM imagery (1301Z) does suggest that the boom was a result of a meteor.”

At this time, it’s not clear if the sound itself was a meteor strike or a sonic boom.

Viewer reports of the “boom,” which was followed by a “rumble,” came from all corners of northeast Ohio and into Pennsylvania. People as far as Cincinnati and Pittsburgh reported hearing or seeing the possible meteor. The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh shared a video taken by an employee that showed the suspected object.

In northeast Ohio, the cameras at a bus garage in the Olmsted Falls School District captured bright lights streaking across the sky.

In an email to WJW, one viewer wrote: “We are in Sandusky, Ohio and that boom shook our house. Felt like something hit the house. Thought it was an electrical issue.”

Another wrote: “I live in Hartville, Stark County[, and] we felt the rumble here. My dogs starting barking right away, but it didn’t bother the horses.”
