Trump backs Kurdish offensive in Iran: ‘I’d be all for it’

President Trump said Thursday that he would back the Kurds if they launched an offensive inside Iran, as the militias have reportedly been in touch with the administration over a potential incursion into western Iran.

“I think it’s wonderful that they want to do that, I’d be all for it,” the president said during an interview with Reuters.

When asked if Washington would supply or has proposed air support for a potential Kurdish offensive against the Iranian regime, Trump told the news wire, “I can’t tell you that.”

Trump said the goal for the Kurds would be to “win.”

“If they’re going to do that, that’s good,” he said.

The coalition of Iranian Kurdish groups, which are based in the semiautonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan on the border of Iran and Iraq, has been preparing for a potential attack inside Iran as a way of further degrading the Iranian military, as both the U.S. and Israeli militaries have been hitting Iran with missiles and bombs as part of the joint military operation.

The CIA has given small arms to Iranian Kurdish militias as part of a secretive push to destabilize the Islamic Republic, multiple news outlets reported this week.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Wednesday that Trump spoke with “Kurdish leaders with respect to our base that we have in northern Iraq.”

A Kurdish Iranian opposition leader, Omar Baleki, said in an interview with ABC News the group is “ready for anything” when asked if they are preparing for a ground assault inside Iran.
