Trump announces slate of Indiana endorsements ahead of May primary
President Trump on Tuesday announced a slate of endorsements for various Indiana state legislative races ahead of the state’s May primary.
Although several of Trump’s endorsements, which were posted on his Truth Social account Tuesday afternoon, were previously announced, the president issued several new messages of support in the state’s House and Senate races.
Trump backed Republican Trevor De Vries in his bid to unseat incumbent state Sen. Dan Dernulc (R) in the state’s 1st Senate District as well as Republican Brian Schmutzler, who is seeking to beat state Sen. Linda Rogers (R). Both Dernulc and Rogers voted against the failed Trump-backed redistricting push in the state late last year.
“Dr. Brian Schmutzler has my Complete and Total Endorsement to be the next State Senator from Indiana’s 11th Senate District,” Trump said in one Truth Social post. “Unlike incumbent Linda Rogers, a ‘RINO’ LOSER who has failed the wonderful people of Indiana so badly, DR. BRIAN SCHMUTZLER IS A WINNER WHO WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”
A majority of Republican state senators voted against a GOP congressional map proposal in December that would have created a 9-0 edge for the party in Congress. Indiana Republicans’ currently hold a 7-2 majority in the lower chamber.
Trump’s endorsements against Dernulc and Rogers are not unexpected, however. The president and his allies warned that they would challenge any Republican lawmaker who voted against redistricting, as the White House pressed GOP-led states to redraw congressional maps ahead of the November midterms.
Democrats have responded to the move, passing a new map in California that is likely to net the party five seats, while Virginia Democrats are also looking to pass a new map later this month.
The president on Tuesday also offered new endorsements for Republican state Reps. Martin Carbaugh, Ben Smaltz, Tony Isa, Bob Heaton, Bruce Borders, Beau Baird, Heath VanNatter, Jeff Thompson, Craig Snow and Jim Pressel.
Trump’s endorsements come just weeks before the Hoosier State’s May 5 primary.
