Trump administration issues grand jury subpoena for Arizona voting records: GOP leader

The Trump administration issued a grand jury subpoena for records pertaining to the Arizona Senate’s 2020 audit of Maricopa County election results, Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen confirmed on Monday in a post on the social platform X.

Petersen, who said he had complied with the subpoena, added, “The FBI has the records. Any other report is fake news.”

Petersen’s post included a screenshot of a Truth Social post made by President Trump, who was celebrating a news story that said the FBI had taken Maricopa County’s election records.

Jason Berry, a spokesperson for the county, said in a statement that their office had not yet received a subpoena “but will cooperate if that were to occur.”

The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes (D) condemned the Trump administration’s actions, saying in a statement, “What the Trump administration appears to be pursuing now is not a legitimate law enforcement inquiry. It is the weaponization of federal law enforcement in service of crackpots and lies.”

Earlier this year, the FBI executed “a court authorized law enforcement action” in the main office for Fulton County, Ga., in Union City, with a county spokesperson saying it was pertaining to 2020 election records.

The Justice Department, weeks prior, filed a complaint against Fulton County for refusing to hand over records pertaining to the 2020 election in the county.

Fulton County and Maricopa County have become focal points around Trump’s repeated challenges over the 2020 election results. Multiple audits have confirmed former President Biden’s win in both states, though the president has baselessly alleged the election was “stolen”

Maricopa County narrowly went for Biden in 2020 by 2 points, but the Arizona Senate hired a firm to do its own audit of the county results, which confirmed Biden’s victory.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D), meanwhile, launched a probe into efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in a state Biden narrowly won. She was later disqualified from working on the probe amid revelations that she had a relationship with an outside prosecutor she had hired. The case was ultimately dropped.
