Former Virginia first lady Dorothy McAuliffe announced Wednesday that she’s running for Congress, joining a crowded Democratic primary for a district situated in the Washington, D.C., suburbs.

“Virginians are working harder than ever, but the middle class is still out of reach for too many,” McAuliffe, who served as U.S. Special Representative for Global Partnerships during the Biden administration and whose husband is former Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D), said in a statement.

“We need a leader who has a record of delivering and can finally bring down costs for families, who will increase access to affordable healthcare, and who will never back down from holding Donald Trump and [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement] accountable,” she added.

McAuliffe joins a burgeoning field to helm Virginia’s 7th Congressional District. She’s aided by the fact that her spouse is both a former Virginia governor and major Democratic fundraiser. Other Democrats eyeing the field include former federal prosecutor J.P. Cooney and Virginia Del. Dan Helmer (D), who serves as the chair of the Virginia House Delegates’ campaign arm.

Virginia Democrats are teeing up a referendum next month that asks voters to allow lawmakers to temporarily pass a new set of congressional lines, which would give the party up to four pickup opportunities in November.

The mapping process would revert back to the state’s redistricting commission after the 2030 U.S. Census.

Virginia is seen as Democrats’ last chance for the party to pass a new set of congressional maps before November, though it’s possible that the referendum could be voided by the Virginia Supreme Court. The high court has allowed the referendum to move forward but is weighing its merits amid Republicans’ challenges over it.

The Virginia House primary is Aug. 4.
