House Democrat: ‘Trump is not well’
Rep. Daniel Goldman (D-N.Y.) on Sunday said President Trump is “not well” following a Wall Street Journal report that said his advisers limited his knowledge of rescue operations for two pilots downed in Iran due to the leader’s “impatience.”
“The commander-in-chief was excluded from commanding a military operation because he was acting so crazy. Think about that,” Goldman wrote in a post on X.
“Trump is not well. We need the 25th amendment before something really bad happens on US soil,” he added.
Under the 25th amendment to the Constitution, the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet may vote to declare a president “unable to discharge the powers and the duties of his office.” Doing so would give the vice president the duties of acting president.
If there is a dispute, the issue would go to Congress. A two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate would be needed to displace the president.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said The Wall Street Journal article was “fake news.”
“Think about this: you, a sitting U.S. congressman, getting duped by fake news. Just imagine how easily you might be compromised,” Cheung wrote in response to Goldman on X.
Goldman’s call echoes other House Democrats who have pushed for Trump to undergo an involuntary transfer of power amid the Iran war.
“Public trust in Donald Trump’s ability to meet the duties of his office has dropped to unprecedented lows as he threatens to destroy entire civilizations, unleashes chaos in the Middle East while violating Congressional war powers, aggressively insults the Pope of the Catholic Church and sends out artistic renderings online likening himself to Jesus Christ,” Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) said in a statement last week.
“We are at a dangerous precipice, and it is now a matter of national security for Congress to fulfill its responsibilities under the 25th Amendment to protect the American people from an increasingly volatile and unstable situation,” he added.
The president received pushback for threatening to “wipe out” Iran’s civilization in a Truth Social post earlier this month.
Lawmakers said the language was unhinged and illegal as Trump floated strikes on civilian infrastructure.
“I’m grateful there’s a ceasefire & scores of innocent people didn’t die tonight,” Iranian-American Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-Ariz.) said after Trump decided against increased strikes.
Talks between the U.S. and Iran are being held in Pakistan with the goal of extending the standing ceasefire. Vice President Vance is reportedly headed to Islamabad for the negotiations, Trump told the New York Post on Monday.
Trump has accused Iran of violating the ceasefire agreement and Iran threatened to retaliate after Marines seized an Iranian-flagged commercial ship on Sunday.
“We’re supposed to have the talks,” Trump said in an interview with the New York Post. “So I would assume at this point nobody’s playing games.”
