A ‘super’ El Niño may be on the way. Here’s how it will impact summer weather
(NEXSTAR) – La Niña is official over, national forecasters said on Thursday, and a super-charged El Niño could be right around the corner.
The odds of a strong or “super” El Niño have grown since the option was first floated by weather models last month. The El Niño pattern is now favored to emerge over the early summer, between May and July, before growing stronger into the winter months.
By the end of the year, the Climate Prediction Center says there’s about a 50% chance it could develop into a “strong” or “very strong” El Niño, with odds split pretty equally between the two.
Super El Niños are rare. There have only been four since 1950, with the last one occurring in 2015 to 2016.
