Sen. Todd Young (Ind.), a key Senate GOP vote, announced Wednesday that he will oppose a war powers resolution to prohibit further military action against Iran, arguing that “danger will only grow if we limit the president’s military options at this critical moment.”
“An abrupt disengagement could pose increased risks to American lives and interests. I want to do my part to help this effort succeed and end Iran’s reign of terror,” Young, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said.
But the Indiana senator at the same time urged Senate colleagues to keep a close watch on the evolving military operations as senior administration officials announced they plan a major bombing campaign against Iran in the days ahead.
“The American people have questions pertaining to the nature of threats and the risks to our troops and homeland. Congress must take a more active role in ensuring answers to those questions are clear and timely,” Young said.
“Hearings and public discussion help keep our constituents informed, and they help administrations sharpen their strategies in response to congressional feedback,” he added.
Young was one of five Republicans who voted in January to discharge a war powers resolution out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to halt further military action against Venezuela, prompting a furious response from President Trump.
Under intense pressure from Trump, Young and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), who also voted to discharge the Venezuela war powers resolution, later voted with Republican leaders to block the measure on the Senate floor.
Young, however, secured a written promise form the administration pledging that Trump would secure congressional authorization before launching any “major military operations” in Venezuela.
Hawley indicated on Monday that he would vote against the war powers resolution to stop further military operations in Iran without congressional authorization.
Iran’s Red Crescent Society has said the death toll in Iran has risen to more than 780 people.
