Fetterman defends support for Trump Iran operation: ‘This is a good thing’

Centrist Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) on Wednesday defended President Trump’s massive military operation against Iran as a “good thing” and declared he is “confident” that the “world is better” as a result of the death of Iran’s supreme leader and other senior officials in the regime.

“What I am confident in [is] that the world is better, that Iran can now not acquire a nuclear bomb. An I’m confident in knowing that the world’s better … having that garbage erased,” Fetterman told MS NOW’s Katy Tur.

The maverick Democrat acknowledged that his strong support for the operation against Iran has put him in conflict with many members of the Democratic Party’s liberal base.

But Fetterman argued that his support for the destruction of Iran’s authoritarian regime doesn’t conflict with core Democratic values.

“I know probably the most toxic thing you can do as a Democrat is to agree with the president about anything at this point,” he said.

“I think people in the base, the people in Pennsylvania and the country, I would say, ‘hey, as a committed Democrat,’ I can say I think this is a good thing and where we are now, I’m proud to stand with Israel,” he added.

Fetterman was the only Senate Democrat to vote against a war powers resolution Wednesday that would have halted continued military action against Iran.

Every GOP senator expect for libertarian conservative Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) voted against the measure.

Fetterman on Monday said he was “baffled” about why more Democratic lawmakers aren’t supporting the effort to destroy Iran’s nuclear weapons program and vast arsenal of short- and medium-range missiles.

“Every member in the U.S. Senate agrees we cannot allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon,” Fetterman posted on X, the social media platform earlier this week.

“I’m baffled why so many are unwilling to support the only action to achieve that. Empty sloganeering vs. commitment to global security — which is it?” he said.
