Saudi Arabia Is A Key Player In Resolving The Israel-U.S. War Against Iran

Saudi Arabia is a critical but cautious actor in the ongoing Israel–U.S. war against Iran. While not the primary mediator, its role as a regional stabiliser and its refusal to allow its territory for offensive strikes against Iran are pivotal to any resolution. Pakistan has emerged as the leading neutral mediator, hosting high-level U.S.–Iranian talks in Islamabad, including a conditional two-week ceasefire in early April 2026.

The Kingdom focuses on bilateral de-escalation with Iran to prevent broader conflict. High-level Riyadh–Tehran talks began in March 2026 to discuss humanitarian corridors and the protection of Persian Gulf energy infrastructure. Saudi Arabia has officially rejected the use of its airspace or territory for military action against Iran, seeking to preserve its 2023 détente. Along with Oman, Egypt, and Turkey, it continues back-channel communications between Washington and Tehran.

Prolonged war threatens Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030. Attacks on energy infrastructure and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have severely impacted Saudi oil exports, prompting the Kingdom to prioritise the peaceful reopening of the waterway. Despite preferring peace, Saudi officials remain wary of a nuclear-armed Iran.

Negotiations are currently stalled. President Trump recently cancelled an envoy trip to Pakistan, citing a lack of Iranian responsiveness. Nonetheless, Saudi “Hajj diplomacy” continues—direct flights for Iranian pilgrims resumed on 25 April 2026, signalling the commitment to functional ties despite wartime conditions.
