DAILY CALLER NEWS FOUNDATION—Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin compared the U.S. to Iran on Sunday, accusing the government of crushing dissent, “killing protesters,” and “terrorizing” citizens.

Martin’s comments drew swift backlash after he linked ongoing unrest in Iran with protests in Minneapolis following a fatal Immigration and Customs Enforcement-involved shooting, framing both as examples of state violence. Martin made the comparison in posts on X, where he said protesters in both countries were “rising up against systems that wield violence without accountability.”

“In Iran, brave protestors confront a far-right theocratic regime that crushes dissent and denies basic freedom,” Martin wrote. “Here at home, tens of thousands are marching after the fatal ICE shooting of Renee Good- demanding justice, transparency, and an end to an unchecked federal force that takes lives and tears families apart.”

“Solidarity across borders means opposing authoritarian power everywhere and defending the right to live free from fear and state violence,” Martin added.
