Democratic Presidential Hopefuls Can’t Stop Talking About Their Terrible Parents

Democrats who appear to be positioning themselves for a 2028 presidential run have settled on a new strategy: Emphasizing their traumatic childhoods. It’s a sensible tactic, given victimhood (of the real and imagined variety) has long been virtuous on the left. 

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been frank about his daddy issues. Helen Lewis, writing for The Atlantic, notes Newsom’s new memoir, “Young Man in a Hurry,” is “dominated by a parent’s emotional distance.” Lewis recounts anecdotes from the memoir: Newsom’s father on his deathbed, refusing to tell his son that he loves him; Newsom’s father refusing to comfort Newsom’s sister, Hilary.
