Left-wing author Don Winslow is trying to pooh-pooh the coolest D-1 sports facility ever built: the University of Alabama’s new $47 million golf facility.

“We are so fucking lost as a country,” he lamented Thursday. “People can’t feed their children and this BS.”

So, ah, what? Is the Crimson Tide responsible for fixing all of America’s ills? Is it up to them to make sure every American has food on the table?

To be frank, I can see the argument that universities now spend way too much money on things that have nothing to do with education, such as college football programs. But at the same time, these big football programs generate a ton of revenue for the school, which they can spend on other sports programs. And if anything, the problem runs way deeper than sports programs. Universities are essentially run as hedge funds these days, and griping over one sublime golf facility doesn’t even scrape the surface. There are also scores and scores of bureaucrats and layers of HR that are built into universities.

Winslow also got absolutely bodied in the replies when someone pointed out that he lives on a very ritzy property in Southern California and is mega rich:

The @NYTimes did a “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” style feature of your estate, didn’t they? How many soup kitchens for the poor did they see when they toured your 30 acres? pic.twitter.com/3pszneJgAU — Jay Miller (@NatrlBornMiller) April 17, 2026

For what it’s worth, I once tried to read a Don Winslow book. It was painful. I thought it was so bad that I couldn’t even make it through the first five pages.
