Merriam-Webster Dictionary Mocks AI Slop In Word Of The Year |
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary’s human editors took aim at artificial intelligence (AI) by choosing “slop” as their 2025 Word of the Year.
The editors announced slop as their 2025 Word of the Year in a Dec. 14 blog post shared to the Merriam-Webster website. They defined slop as “digital content of low quality that is produced usually in quantity by means of artificial intelligence.”
“The flood of slop in 2025 included absurd videos, off-kilter advertising videos, cheesy propaganda, fake news that looks pretty real, junky AI-written books, ‘workslop’ reports that waste coworkers time… and lots of talking cats,” the post read. “People found it annoying, and people ate it up.”
