It’s not often you receive a social invitation that makes you wince.
But wince I did when my friend Susan’s text arrived, asking if I’d like to sign up for a festive sauna.
So far, so cosy. But after the sauna, we – along with a lovely group of pals – would run down the beach at East Sands in St Andrews, in our swimsuits, into the sea.
In December. In the North Sea.
It’s quite the thing, wild swimming. People swear by the benefits.
I listen to converts and feel a mix of admiration at their bravery and relief it’s not me.
But the evidence is that there’s something in it.
A growing number of people who live in Dundee are making a trip to Fife regularly, to sauna and swim.
There’s St Andrews Seaside Sauna on the East Sands and Wild Scottish Sauna on the West Sands.
The setup is ideal at the former, with delicious snacks awaiting afterwards at the Cheesy Toastie Shack, and the equally-celebrated Dook for snacks at the latter.
