It’s not normal for your vote share to drop by over 10% and still to be the largest political party in Scotland by a country mile.
That’s the story of the SNP in this election. The comfort and security of all the good years providing a decent buffer for tougher times.
On the one hand, you’d expect a fall in the vote for a party into its fifth term in power and second decade.
On the other, to brief for much of the campaign that you were in touching distance of an historic majority, spoke to a sense of infallibility that voters sniffed out and pounced on.
