KATY GORDON: Koda the dog’s death in Perthshire shows why other owners need to step up |
As a dog owner it’s always heartbreaking to hear about the death of other dogs.
So the news this week that a Perthshire dog was put to sleep after contracting parvovirus hit me hard.
Koda’s owner Kayleigh, from St Madoes, spoke about her beloved pet and having to make the decision to end Koda’s suffering after his condition rapidly deteriorated after catching the disease.
And the thing is, it didn’t need to happen.
Parvovirus is a disease that can be mitigated through vaccinations and, most importantly, picking up dog poo.
Koda was vaccinated, his owner did her job, but he would have been less likely to pick up the illness had another dog owner vaccinated their pet and bagged and binned its poo.
Kayleigh said it best: “Pick up your dog poo for a start – it’s not hard.
“If you don’t have a poo bag, knock on somebody’s door and ask for a carrier bag.
“Make sure your dogs are all vaccinated.”
Sadly, ignorant........
