KATY GORDON: Is anyone feeling benefit of Tayside and Fife’s 20mph speed limits?

It might surprise some of you to know that I am not a fan of the new reduced speed limits.

Or rather, I’m not a fan of the fact that many councils have tried a “one size fits all” approach to implementing them.

Those tactics rarely work, especially across council areas that take in cities, tiny hamlets and everything in between.

In Perth and Kinross, it seems like every single town and village’s main thoroughfares have been designated 20mph. Dundee City Council area has also gone for a blanket speed drop.

Angus council has at least seen sense, blocking a unilateral change after a public consultation showed most residents were against the proposal.

Fife Council has also asked residents what they would prefer and are acting accordingly.

Some, admittedly, need it due to lots of on-street parking or narrow streets. But others, big wide roads with lots of visibility have been reduced too, and it’s there that the logic fails me.

Is this just an easier option, because by saying all that’s the job done, rather than going out and assessing where it is actually needed, it saves a bit of time and money?

Or is an attempt to claim fairness, so if one community complains the council can respond that........
