KATY GORDON: Doing Dry January? Here’s some things that helped me as I got sober |
I don’t often talk publicly about my sobriety.
But given it’s the start of a new year and many people will be undertaking Dry January, I thought I’d share a few thoughts.
Last month I marked two years since I had my last alcoholic drink.
I gave up for many reasons, which I won’t go into detail about here, but needless to say it had reached a point where it had become a problem that I couldn’t ignore anymore.
Having previously tried on numerous occasions to put down the booze and white-knuckle it myself, this time I sought help through support groups and have since been working a programme that keeps me sober and helps me to be a better person all-round.
For me, it’s worked so far and I keep going because I know that it’s all too easy to slip up.
But I know not everyone who does Dry January, Sober October or any other periods of abstinence has a problem with alcohol, so I don’t put us all in the same boat and I don’t judge anyone else’s drinking (who am I to judge anyone at this point?).
