New York’s flavored vape ban leaves a bad taste

A few weeks back, New York became the first state in the nation to restrict the sale of flavored vaping products. This was seen as a huge win for public health, and the only real solution to the youth vaping “epidemic”.

In just the past six months, state legislation to raise purchasing age from 18 to 21, a federal ban on Juul flavors, and a 20% retail vapor tax were all enacted to curb youth initiation of vaping. We don’t even have a single data point on the effectiveness of these measures, yet the false conflating of lung disease and deaths caused by illicit marijuana vaping has resulted in a sweeping regulatory package that was passed in the 2020 state budget.

As of today, the best place to purchase illegal flavored vapor products in New York is from a locally owned corner store. Although these products are banned, there has been no enforcement of this new law. The responsible vapor retailers are on the verge of ruin, while the very same vendors who irresponsibly sold to minors are still selling fruity flavored vapes, and at an extreme mark up. And with online sales also being banned, there is already a consumer rush to the black........
