Writer’s fear of tragic war came true after he turned militant

We sometimes come across a past author’s writing that seems surprisingly prescient. One such example is the essay “Japan-U.S. war is the last thing I expect, but …” by Saneatsu Mushanokoji (18851976).

The piece was published in the Bungeishunju magazine 17 years before Japan started war with the United States and Britain.

“Horrible things seem quite unlikely to happen, but they actually happen rather easily,” he wrote at the outset of the essay. He went on to express his concerns about rumors of Japan going to war with the United States and argued how terribly absurd the idea was.
