Utterly senseless carnage in New Zealand requires cool objectivity

Christchurch, the third largest city in New Zealand and home to the sprawling Botanic Gardens, is said to be the "most British city" outside of the United Kingdom.

But it took a major earthquake to make Christchurch a household word in Japan.

Less than three weeks before the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011, a devastating temblor struck Christchurch on Feb. 22, killing 185 people. The victims included 28 Japanese citizens who were students at a language school in a building that was destroyed by the quake.
