School rugby team tackles a new opponent

There appears little connection between high school rugby players and global warming. But they are not in separate worlds.

The rugby club of Tochigi Prefectural Sano Senior High School took part in the COP24 United Nations conference on climate change held earlier in December in Poland.

“It was very enlightening to learn that every aspect of our life can be a cause of abnormal weather,” says Yumu Watarai, 17, the captain of the team who participated in the event as an observer.

A lecture on sports and the environment at the school in September inspired the team to travel to Poland for the U.N. climate conference. The lecture led the rugby players to start thinking what their team could do for environmental protection.
