Kirin Kiki’s philosophy of taking illness in stride lives on

It has already been three months since actress Kirin Kiki died on Sept. 15 at age 75.

I have been watching her films back to back recently, namely, "Sweet Bean," "Every Day A Good Day" and "Chronicle of My Mother." Her dispassionate portrayal of old age gives each work a deep and lasting resonance.

I never met Kiki in person, but she once called me back in reply to my request for an interview.

"Neither my agent nor makeup person is here now, so I'm holding down the fort," she explained. "As you are probably aware, I'm sick all over my body," she went on airily for more than half an hour.
