I should apologize to all who are already back at work after the year-end and New Year's break, but I wanted to keep luxuriating in the festive spirit a bit longer, so I visited a "yose" traditional Japanese vaudeville theater.

The theater's "rakugo" comic storytelling program could not have been more appropriate for this season. There was a story about hoping to see an auspicious "hatsuyume" (the first dream of the new year), and another on the theme of snacking on the sly on "kuromame" (a traditional Japanese New Year's dish of soybeans simmered in a sweet-savory sauce).

And there also was a tale of Edo Era (1603-1867) gents feasting on "shishi-nabe" (hot pot of wild boar meat and vegetables).

The men are members of their neighborhood fire watch team. But while on duty one night,........
