Kokontei Shinsho V (1890-1973), master of “rakugo” comic storytelling, took his fondness of the bottle to new heights beyond the ordinary.

When the Great Kanto Earthquake struck in 1923, Shinsho grabbed his wallet, ran out of his home and headed to a local liquor store. The ground was heaving violently.

He wanted to buy sake before the store burned down or its stock got smashed.

“What flashed through my mind was a fear of all sake disappearing from Tokyo unless I acted fast,” Shinsho recalled in his autobiography “Binbo Jiman” (Bragging........
