I find myself wondering how Diego Maradona (1960-2020), the Argentine soccer great and the game’s eternal rebel, would have reacted to the spectacle that has unfolded on soccer’s grandest stage in recent days.

Had he seen a man of power thrust his grubby hands onto the sacred pitch, Maradona would surely have exploded in rage, denouncing the intrusion in language no newspaper could print.
