The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China wears two hats. It is the national army of China and also the army of the Communist Party of China.

Supreme command is shared by two entities, namely, the Central Military Commission of the People’s Republic of China and the Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China.

However, these two are de facto the same organization, and headed by President Xi Jinping.

This setup explains why this question has to be asked: In the event of a national crisis, whose interests does the PLA prioritize, the people’s or the Communist Party’s?
