EDITORIAL: Taiwan is not a bargaining chip between U.S. and China

In the U.S.-China summit on May 14, Beijing placed the bilateral ties under the new rubric of “constructive strategic stability.”

U.S. President Donald Trump visited China for the first time in nine years and met with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Under the new relationship, the main pillar will be cooperation, with stability gained through a moderate level of competition.

What became clear from the summit was the attempt by China to demonstrate that it was a stable superpower as opposed to the United States under Trump.

In his second term as president, the United States has disparaged the foundation of the postwar order symbolized by alliances, international law and rule of law and chosen to place emphasis on diplomacy through deals seeking only benefits for itself.
